Reading is something that is great for your mind, it increases vocabulary, spelling, etc, but how is it affecting your eyes? personally I have a mom that reads everyday for a few hours and she is nearsighted, my father same deal, just a coincidence right? Nope
Studies have shown that myopia or nearsightedness affects 30% of the us population and its leading cause of progression is near-point stress. Examples of near-point stress are reading books, working on the computer, or anything up close.
"There is also growing evidence that nearsightedness may be caused by the stress of too much close vision work. It normally first occurs in school age children. Since the eye continues to grow during childhood, nearsightedness generally develops before age 20..." (American Optometric Association)

This is really interesting. I am nearsighted and I used to read a lot as a kid and when I was younger. Maybe this is one of the reasons. But as far a reading goes, I think it's much better for you to stare at a book than to stare at a TV. Both may hurt your eyes but at least a book is good for your brain.
